Essence of Dad
by Roger W Hancock
Dad dear dad, so long ago gone,
your voice, your face an echo.
Remembering your wisdom,
I now impart to your grandsons.
The reprimands thought unjust,
I now see as righteousness.
Over protectiveness, I had thought;
simply love to keep from harm.
The fatherhood I now live,
reminiscent of your firm hand.
Loving protection of my sons,
passed to me from your firm love.
Experiences of fatherhood,
your essence lives through mine.
Love to keep my sons safe,
guiding law of my firm hands.
Wisdom imparted once to me,
I, now pass to your grandsons.

Firm Father
by Roger W Hancock
I affirm my Father is firm,
though rarely saw his anger.
When he spoke, firm as oak,
I'd listen to Dad's candor.

Dad's Silence
by Roger W Hancock
My Father did not often speak,
never said he loved me.
Though I knew by his actions,
the love he did not speak.
As Dad failed to express,
the duty fell on me;
first to break the silence,
fell upon his son.
I first said it was uncomfortable,
then told Dad I loved him.
Dad's reply silent still,
expressed in his gleaming eyes.

Father's Day
Father, grandfather, forefather;
fatherhood and parenting.
Giving gifts to those still near,
remembering those of yesteryear.

A Grandfather's Joy
Far fewer thoughts are written of Father
than those expressed of Mother.
So I'll include a rhyme I wrote,
since I am now a Grandpa!
Zander and Papa
by Roger W Hancock
Zander sits upon the lap,
as his grandpa takes a nap.
Later race the horse’s track,
upon his Papa’s back.
