Quio
(kwee-o) is an American
form of poetry similar to the haiku and the Lune.
Unlike the haiku and lune the quio consists of eleven syllables on three lines.
The protocol of the eleven syllables are arranged as (3/5/3) three
syllables in the first line, five syllables in the second, and three in
the third. It is common for a basis of nature or humanity in most
forms of poetry; being a very concise form the Quio has no such
criteria.
The concept of the ‘Quio’ as an art form originated
by Jack Collom, of Boulder, Colorado, who enjoyed the Lune created by
Robert Kelley. In the early 1970s Jack Collom bought Kelley's book
Knee Lunes. Collom contacted Kelly for permission to use the
'Lune' name for his 3/5/3 form that he began to write in the mid 70s.
Collom has written thousands of 'Lunes' teaching the form to his
students for over 35 years. The 3/5/3 form was not given the name Quio
until the PoetPatriot, Roger W Hancock, on September
22, 2002 thought he had created the form. To differentiate between the
Lune as a 5/3/5 form and the more consise 3/5/3 form, 'Quio' becomes the
name of the more concise 3/5/3 form.
