Will probably surpase the 1960 Chile Tsunami
in deaths.
[The death toll may rise or decrease. Cell
phone service has been disrupted. Many have lost their cell
phone and not many have memorized the phone numbers of their
loved-ones.]

The strongest quake since the 2004
9.15 Indian Ocean Quake, struck Japan on March 11. This quake
measured 9.0 with the epicenter 81 miles offshore of the Oshika
Peninsula. The strenght of the quake caused a slight shift in
the axis of the earth and a minute slowing of earth's rotation.
A confirmed 8,805 people have died in the quake and tsunamis with 2,644
injured. Police estimations show more then 18,000 dead. Over 13,260 people were still unacounted for one week
later. 336,521 people have been displaced from their homes. Some
of the tsunami waves measured 33ft traveling 6 miles inland.
Chile, 11,000 miles away, saw tsunami waves of 6.6 feet high.
Since 1900 when actual earthquake record keeping began this one
of the five most powerful earthquakes. The most powerful to hit
Japan. Much of Japan's infrastructure was distroyed; roads,
rails, 100,000+ buildings, one dam collapsed depriving water for
1.5 million homes. 4.4 million homes were left without
electricity. The
Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant was damaged causing release
of radiation. Nations around the world began to monitor
radiation levels more frequently. Initial estimates of damages
range from $14.5 billion USD to 34.6 billion. The World Bank
estimates damages at $235 billion USD.
