split into three branches with the main branch reaching Catania.
The lava flowed the first 13 miles moving an average of 162 feet
per hour with the next two miles creeping at 2 feet per hour.
The lava spilled over a 60 foot wall into Catania.

An explosive

eruption in the ships journal on June 15, 1779. "On the 15th it
continued calm until noon when it clouded up and became very
black and dark: the two mountains Peter and Paul (Avachinsky and
Koryaksky) were covered with the atmosphere near half way from
their summits down, and at two o'clock we had again a small
shock of an earthquake, and heard a hollow rumbling noise in the
air, and the atmosphere continuing to condense, it became almost
as dark as night, and the face of heaven looked very wild"

Laki

On June 8th, 1783
continuing into 1784 the
eruption of Laki Volcano emitted toxic fluorine/sulfur-dioxid
that killed the livestock causing a famine that killed the 9,350
people inhabiting the area around the volcano in Iceland. The
Laki 1783 eruption was the largest lava eruption in recorded
volcanic history. The largest lava flow in historical times
covered 2.9 cubic miles of lava spread out over 218 square miles
of Iceland's landscape. This eruption is the 8th deadliest in
recorded History. Benjamin Franklin, diplomat, inventor,
scientist, and more had observed the eruption in 1784, during
one of his voyages to France. Franklin hypothosized that the
volcano's introduction of massive quantities of the volcanic
particles into the upper atmosphere could cause a reduction in
the surface temperature as the particles would lessen the solar
energy penetrating the atmosphere. Franklin was right
