On August 7th within 40 minutes in mid-morning 6 volcanic blasts sent ash half a mile into the air. Authorities order the evacuation of 20,000 people. Mount Mayon is the Philippeans' most active volcano and has erupted 50 time in the past 400 years. Typhoon Durian on November, 30, with its tropical rains caused mudslides of volcanic ash and boulders from Mount Mayon slopes. 1,000 peope were killed and a large part of the Padang village was covered up to the roofs of houses by the mud. Among the killed were students of the Auinas University near Legazpi City when their dormitory was engulfed with mud. The city of Legazpi escaped the mud but not the floods.
