Amendment XII was enacted after the tie in 1800 - In 1804 the electors began
voting for President and Vice President using separate ballots.
This change ensured the Vice President would most likely be of
the same party as the President. |

Adams on the first ballot, over Jackson
and Crawford with Clay having been dropped out of the running.

votes, Jackson received

electoral votes, throwing the election to the House of
Representatives. |
