- The popular vote shown is for the Party Ticket. Popular Vote Results will vary among sources but will give a general idea of the percentage in relation to the other results. Popular vote figures exclude those states that did not use a popular vote to select their electors to the Electoral College.
- - - Amendment XII was enacted after the tie in 1800 - In 1804 the electors began voting for President and Vice President using separate ballots. This change ensured the Vice President would most likely be of the same party as the President.
- Beginning in 1848 all States hold the presidential election on the same day in November.

^V1	2008 was the first election since 1952 to not have a sitting President or Vice President as a candidate.
^V2	Both major party candidates were born outsided the contigous 48 states; Barack in Hawaii or Kenya; McCain in Panama.
^V3	Barak Obama began his political career in the Socialist Party. The Social Party began to infiltrate the Democrat Party in the 1950s.
^V4	A record number of voters (131,257,328) turned out in the highest percentage of eligible voters since 1968.
*	Poling showed 20% of African-Americans registered voters and only 8% of White registered voters thought race to be the most important factor when voting.
