Amendment XII was enacted after the tie in 1800 -
In 1804 the electors began voting for President and Vice
President using separate ballots. This change ensured the Vice
President would most likely be of the same party as the
President.
- Beginning in 1848 all States hold the presidential election on
the same day in November. |

Ulysses Grant again
garnered an overwhelming majority of the electoral
votes. |

Horace Greeley
died prior to the casting of electoral votes. Greeley's
three votes from
Georgia electors were disallowed
by Congress. His other 63
electoral votes were scattered among the other four
democratic candidates for president. |

Votes that were pledged to Greeley's running mate B. Gratz Brown for
Vice President were scattered over Brown and 7 of the other Vice
Presidential candidates. |

objections were raised in Congress over the counting of
the electoral votes* but none would have any consequence
