Study
quakes |
The Portugal quake
of 1755 caused philosophical thoughts about a 'just and
harmoniously ordered universe' to be questioned causing many
philosophers to begin taking on a new 'questioning attitude'.
Out of the philosophical considerations the study of earthquakes
began. The first scientific inquiries on studying earthquakes
was began by Marquess de Pombal of Lisbon, Portugal. John
Mitchell, an English physicist created the first theories of
wave motion while studying the effects of earthquakes throughout
Eruope. |
