hit by a 6.3 earthquake on May 26th. two after shocks of 4.8 and
4.6 occured 4 and 6 hours later. Tsunami warnigs were issued but
did not occur. It is speculated that tsunami rumors were started
by organized looters who burglarized homes while the owners had
fled to safety. 5,749 are killed and 38,568
are injured. 600,000 people are left homeless. 127,000 homes
were destroyed and 451,000 more were damaged. Damages in U.S.
currency run to about 3.1 billion dollars. |

dollars. One tsunami was reported with a wave height of 10 cm at

are hit by an 8.3 earthquake on November 15th. A tsunami wave
height of 34 cm (13.4") at Honolulu, Hawaii, injured one person. Other

wave heights from 5 to 176 cm (2" - 5' 9"). Later the same day a 6.7 quake
hits east of the islands.

quake hits east of the Kuril Islands on January 13th. Tremors
were felt in various parts of Japan. Tsunamis were recorded at
tide station around the Pacific Rim ranging from 4 cm to 37 cm
(1.5" to 14.5").

Honshu, Japan, on March 25th, feels the rumblings of a 6.7
earthquake. One person was killed and 359 injured. 13,556 homes
were destroyed. The quake caused 60 landslides, damaged roads,
cracks in the Noto Airport landing field and disruption of train
and water services. A tsunami was generated that hit several
other Japanese shores. |

The Solomon
Islands were hit with three earthquakes on April 1st. The first
quake was a magnitude 8.1 the second 6.6 then the third was 6.9.
Several villages were destroyed and 52 people killed by the
quakes and tsunamis. 300 homes, schools, and hospitals were
destroyed and 500 houses damaged. landslides were caused by the
uplifts of the ground. A tsunami around the Pacific rim measured
from 8 cm to 2 meters. The tsunamis caused damage in Papua New
Guinea, Rossel Island and Bougainville. In the U.S.A.,
California and Hawaii saw Tsunamis recorded from 20 cm to 22 cm
(7.9" to 8.6").

Indonesia on September 12th & 13th. The first, the largest quake
of 2007, an 8.5 hits Southern Sumatra. The second hits at 7.9
over the Kepulauan Mentawai area. The third hits on the 13th and
measures 6.5 followed by the 4th quake at 7.0. The 2nd, 3rd and
4th were in the Kepulauan Mentawai area. In the four quakes 25
people are killed with 161 injured. 56,425 homes are destroyed
or damaged. Tsunamis hit various tide stations around the Indian
Ocean that include Oman, Thailand and Australia. They measured
from 4.5 cm to 227 cm (1.8" to 7' 5.5").

eastern Sichuan in China on May 12th. 69,195 people are killed,

million people had evacuated their homes with 5 million left

million buildings damaged. Damage estimations were set at 86
billion U.S. dollars. 700 of the dead were buried in landslides
that also created 34 barrier lakes threatening 700,000 people
that lived downstream. Seizmic activity from this quake was felt
in Bangladesh, Thailand, Taiwan, and Vietnam. |

toll draw relief efforts from around the world. Nine days later
a 5.9 quake hits the area on January 21st, adding to the damage,
by the 24th, 52 aftershocks of 4.5+ were registered. 280,000
houses and buildings had collapsed or were badly damaged.

An 8.8 earthquake
hit central Chile near the city of Concepcion at 3:34 the
morning of February 27th. A 15-storey building colapsed, others
caught fire, bridges collapsed, and the rising death toll reaching
521. The devastation of Chile's infrastructure may cast
an economic blow to the stability of the country. Initial
Damages are estimated at 14 Billion dollars. A 6.6 quake hit
Chile on March 4th.
More than 33 aftershocks were felt before noon; one, a magnitude
6.9 (a second quake?). The quake generated a tsunami that had
reached New Zealand and was expected to reach Hawaii and Russia
but became non-events. The Tsunami hit the French Polynesia
coast-line with 6 foot waves. Nations around the Pacific Rim
prepared for the tsunami. It is the largest quake since a
magnitude 9.0 hit off the
west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra on December 26,
2004.

Zealand's southern island was hit at 4:35 am. There were two
injuries and one heart attack. One foreshock of 5.8 hit just 5
seconds before the main tremmor. Aftershocks up to 6.3 continued
into 2011. |

was difficult to provide humanitarian aid to remote and

Islands on December 21st. Afterquakes within 6 hours 22
aftershocks were registerd; two of those were 5.6. 79 after
shocks of 5.0+ would ocure in the next seven days. No injuries
or damages were reported. |
