Reva
Hancock
Reva Hancock was born in Oregon about 1916 or 1917. Reva died having
just become a young lady. Reva Hancock was my Father, Kenneth Hancock's
sister. He was born in 1914 my Uncle John Hancock in 1918. My
Grandmother, Florence (Mead) Hancock, had three boys and one girl. The
other boy, Eugene, had also died young as well and I believe was older
than Reva. Reva died from complications due to having diabetes. I am
surmising her death was 1932 or 1933. The family Bible was stolen in a
burglary.
A single sheet of lined paper
was found among my Uncle John's papers that had the following poem. When
folded, the top of the second page was exposed showing the last third of
the poem. When one fold was opened, written larger was "Original Copy of
this poem." One more fold opened exposed the first part of the poem. Top
of the page was the title, "The Golden West" followed with, "By Reva
Hancock" Below her name was, "age 13," which was obviously written in
later. I am surmising the poem was writtin in 1929 or 1930.

The
Golden West
By Reva Hancock
[age 13]
1. Way out in the land
of the setting sun,
Where giant mountains around us stand.
And the giant trees having their fun.
They seem to sing about our land
Way out in the "Golden West."
2. The mountain streams with cool fresh water.
Keeps on flowing without a faulter.
Till they reach the ocean wide and deep.
Where not a wave is in their sleep
Way out in the "Golden West."
3. Oh! come and join the rest,
Out here in the "Golden West"
Where the bired and the bees,
Are singing with ease,
Way out in the "Golden West."
4. Oh if you could only dream,
You Eastern folks.
Of all the beauties of the streams,
And of the mountains trees and flowers.
You'd think you were up on towers.
Way out in the "Golden West."
