New Year’s Day

         by Roger W Hancock

A new beginning once each year,

high-spirited resolutions.

Intended purpose or fermented spirit,

perseverance once each year.

Another calendar to plan again

let priority of family be your gain.

Record the plans that you dream,

lest fleeting time to pass them by.

It takes on the hour of each 24 hours,

on one day to begin each year.

Celebrations ‘round the clock,

for purposeful existence to renew.

Midnight comes, hands straight up,

the end of one small era.

Let the next be your best,

in the coming of this year next.

Each 24 hours hands straight up,

around the world begins each year.

Cheers of shouts and so much noise,

as the hands of time roll by.

Martin Luther King

by Roger W Hancock

Martin Luther King, Junior,

a modern man of great.

On principal in peace he stood,

his words, his character proved.

Content of ones character,

the essence of a man.

To be judged by who you are,

not by your skin color.

Simple truth, spoke the King,

yet men in ignorance stand.

Bigotry in depth of man,

in need of light to fade the dark.

Reverend King spoke God’s truth,

equality between each race.

I simplify his speech,

with ‘consideration’ for us each.

The man spoke for all on earth,

not only for one race.

Forgive, forget, move on in peace,

with no tolerance for injustice.

Peaceful nonviolence to the end,

his words, his wisdom proclaim.

Perseverance against unjust laws,

in peace changing social law.

The man, the King, modern prophet,

whose message changed America.

Justice increased, yet more to come,

justice prevails within the peace.

St. Patrick's Day

Green Day!

Green day... what, hey…
environmental day of green?
No! It’s Saint Patrick’s Day;
this day wear the Irish green.
Remember the fairy tail land,
father’s home of Irish green.
Skip across the blarney stone,
wary of the algae green.
An Irish kiss upon the cheek,
for lassie with no pinch of green.
A little pinch upon the thigh,
“ouch” said lad; forgot his green.
This day, from the Irish fairyland,
leprechaun’s shamrock green.
Those of Irish blood demand,
just a little pinch of green.

by Roger W Hancock

Nothing is ever free,

though to you it be.

Somewhere, somehow,

someone paid.
