Louisiana
became the 18th state admitted to the Union.
In January 26, 1861, Louisiana joined the Confederacy, after
the Civil War it re-entered the Union.
Area - 49,650 sq. miles

- New Orleans is founded in 1718 and named for Phillippe Duc
D'Orleans
- New Orleans becomes the capital of Louisiana in 1723
which had been Biloxi.
- The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 is obtained for 15 million
dollars.
- W.C. C. Claiborne is appointed governor in 1804 of the Territory
of Orleans.
- Louisiana is admitted to the Union in 1812 as the 18th state.
- Baton Rouge becomes the current capital of Louisiana in 1849.
- Louisiana's Secession Convention in 1861overwhelmingly votes for secession.
- Louisiana's Judah P. Benjamin becomes
Confederate Secretary of State in 1862.
- Henry W. Allen succeeds Thomas Overton Moore in 1864 as Confederate governor of Louisiana.
- Michael Hahn becomes Federal governor of Louisiana in 1864.
- The new constitution of 1864 (Reunion) abolishes slavery.
- Louisiana is re-admitted to the Union in 1868.

- William Pitt Kellogg is recognized as governor of
Louisiana in 1872 by the Grant administration.
- Both Democrat Francis T. Nicholls and
Republican Stephen B. Packard claim victory in election for
governor in 1877 with both taking the oath of office January
8th. In February Packard relinquishes his claims to the governorship.
- Edward Douglass White appointed to the
United States Supreme Court in 1894.
- May 12 - A new constitution in 1898 includes the
"Grandfather Clause" to permit illiterate whites to
vote; a poll tax and literacy test is included to disqualify black
voters.
- Edward Douglass White was appointed
Chief Justice of the United States in 1910.
- Louisiana adopts a new constitution on June 1, 1921.
- In 1930 Governor Huey P. Long becomes a U.S. Senator.
- An assassin's bullet mortally wounds U.S. Senator Huey Long Baton Rouge
on the steps of the state capitol on September 8, 1935. Senator
Long dies on September 10.
- Political scandals in 1939 force the resignation of Governor
Richard W. Leche.
- Sam Jones and reform forces gain victories in 1940 giving the Long
machine its first political defeat in over a decade.
- Long machine regains control when Earl Long
defeats Sam Jones in gubernatorial election in 1948.
- Corrine Claiborne "Lindy" Boggs becomes
Louisiana's first congresswoman in 1973 after her husband, Congressman
T. Hale Boggs, is killed in a plane crash.

- Ernest Morial is elected mayor in 1977,
becoming the first black mayor of New Orleans.
- David C. Treen elected in 1979 as Louisiana's first Republican
governor since Reconstruction.
- Louisiana repeals the last racial classification law in the
United States in 1983.
- Edwin W. Edwards wins landslide victory in 1983 over
incumbent David C. Treen for governor of Louisiana. Edwin W.
Edwards becomes the first three-term governor
- In 1985 Governor Edwards is indicted on federal
racketeering charges.
- The 1988 Republican National Convention
meets in New Orleans, August 15-18.
- An embarrassment to the Republican Party in 1989, former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke
is elected to the State Legislature. (The KKK had
historically been Democrats)
- Edwards wins his fourth term in a 1991 landslide victory over
David Duke. Edward's campaign slogan was "Vote for the
Crook. At Least He's Honest!"
- Bobby Jindal,
Republican from Louisiana, in 2004 becomes the first Asian-Indian-American
elected to the U.S. Congress in 48 years; in 1956 Dalip
Singh Saund won the
California seat.
