Most Powerful

Mount Pelee erupted in 1902 from April 24th into May emitting lava and ash flows. Several explosive eruptions preceded the largest a blasting eruption on May 8th. Saint-Pierre was covered with layers of volcanic ash and rock. Many people were killed from the intense heat of a nuee ardente; a dark black cloud of smoke. Volcanic rumblings increased causing the devastating mudflow that poured through Saint-Pierre and the village of Mome Rouge on May 5th. 30,000 people died. Only two people from the area of destruction survived. This Mount Pelee eruption was the 3rd deadliest and 8th most powerful eruption in historical times with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 4. It is the most deadliest of the 20th century.

On May 18th Mount Saint Helens in Washington State awakes with an explosive eruption that takes out the top and side of Mount St. Helens. The eruption began with an earthquake and resulted with a landslide and an explosion directed both horizontally and vertically that blankets eastern Washington with ash. The huge quantities of volcanic particles ejected into the atmosphere had an effect on climatic patterns. Harry Truman of Spirit Lake lodge, enamored with the media attention prior to the explosion vows to stay on the mountain. Truman in his 90s perished with the lodge in the explosion. Activity afterwards and until 1989 consisted mainly of lave dome forming. 57 people including Harry died in the blast. This 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens was the 5th most powerful eruption in historical times with a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 5.
