becomes the 4th President in 1809, serving until 1817.

Vice President Clinton having died in office on April 20,

President James Madison begins second term as President.

Madison's
second Vice President was Elbridge Gerry.
The word "gerrymander" was coined to describe the oddly shaped
district his party created in 1811.
Gerry signed the Declaration of
Independence and Articles of Confederation.
He was born in Marblehead, Essex County,
Massachusetts on July
17, 1744.
He died in office on November 23, 1814 in
Washington, D.C
The President Pro Tempore of the Senate, John Gaillard, was next
in line to succeed to the presidency. |
