- In 1772 Jean Baptiste
Point DuSable built a trading post near Lake Michigan becoming
the first resident of the settlement that becomes Chicago.

In 1784 Virginia relinquishes its claim to Illinois.
- Northwest Ordinance places Illinois in the Northwest Territory
in 1787.
- Congress, in 1800, creates the Indiana Territory, which
includes Illinois.
- In 1809 Illinois Territory separated from the Indiana
Territory.
- Congress organizes the Illinois Territory in 1809, with
Kaskaskia the capital.The govenor was Ninian Edwards .
- Illinois becomes the 21st.state in 1818, with Kaskaskia the
capital. The first Governor was Shadrach Bond.
- Vandalia becomes the state capital in 1820.
- In 1824 voters defeat a constitutional convention call to
permit slavery in the state.
- General Assembly enacts the first public school law in 1825
and levies a school tax.
- Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) moves to Illinois from Indiana in
1830.
- The 1835 General Assembly grants a charter for the
Jacksonville Female Academy, the first institution in the state
for women's education.
- Chicago receives a city charter in 1837; William Ogden becomes
the first mayor.
- In 1839 Springfield became the state capital after efforts
that include those of young legislator, Abraham Lincoln.
- The 1853 General Assembly passes legislation that prohibits
free blacks from settling in the state.
- A free public school system is adopted by the 1855 General
Assembly.
- In 1858 democrat Stephen A. Douglas wins a Senate seat over
Republican Abraham Lincoln.
- In 1860, defeating three other candidates, Lincoln is elected
President of the United States.
- Lincoln is reelected President in 1864.
- General Assembly repeals measures against black settlement, in
1865, becoming the first state to ratify the Thirteenth
Amendment abolishing slavery.

- In 1865 Lincoln is assassinated in Washington, D.C. and is
buried in Springfield.
- Much of Chicago is destroyed in the Great Fire of 1871 that
raged for three days from October 8th to the 11th.
- the first African-American is elected to office in Illinois in
1872. John Jones of Chicago becomes a Cook County commissioner.
- The General Assembly moves into the current capital building
in 1876 although construction was not completed until 1888.
Ground breaking for the Capital was in 1868, taking 20 years and
$4.5 million to complete.
- The Illinois National Guard is established by the General
Assembly in 1877.
- The first compulsory school attendance legislation is enacted
in 1883.
- In 1892 Chicago attorney Myra Bradwell became the first woman
admitted to practice law.
- regulations for child labor and factory inspections are
established by the 1893 General Assembly.
- In 1899 the first juvenile court system in the nation is
established.
- First elected in 1872 Joseph G. Cannon begins in 1903 the
fourth of four successive terms as Speaker of the House.
- In 1911 Ronald
Reagan is born in Tampico, Illinois. He become a film actor, governor of
California, and the 40th president of the United
States. He is also credited with ending the Cold War.
- In 1913 the General Assembly grants women the right to vote
for presidential electors.
- Voters in 1918 approve a state roads bond issue, appropriating
$60 million for paving roads.
- Roland Burris is the first black to become Attorney General of
Illinois, in 1991.
