- November 2, 1889 - South
Dakota becomes the 40th state admitted to the Union. Both
North and South Dakota become states that year as well as
Montana and Washington..
Area - 77,121 sq.

- Louisiana reverts to France in
1720.
- In 1762 France cedes
Louisiana to Spain.
- 1800 Louisiana reverts back to France in 1800.
- France sells Louisiana to the United States for $3
million in 1803.
- 1804 District of Louisiana created in 1804 and is administered by
Indiana.
- Lewis and Clark reach South Dakota in 1804.
- Lewis and Clark pass back through South Dakota in 1806.
- Missouri Territory organized - South Dakota is included
within the borders when the Missouri Territory is organized in
1812.
- Sitting Bull a Lakota Sioux leader helped lead the Indian
forces that defeated Lt. Col.
Custer at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876.

- The Michigan Territory is organized in 1834 and extends as far west
as the Missouri River.
- The Wisconsin Territory created in 1836 extending as far west
as the Missouri River.
- In 1838 the Iowa Territory is created and includes all lands north of
today's boundary of Missouri, between the Mississippi and
Missouri Rivers.
- 1849 Minnesota Territory is established in 1849 and
includes the land
north of Iowa's present boundary, between the Mississippi and
Missouri Rivers.
- Dakota is left when in 1858 Minnesota is admitted to the
Union with its present
boundaries.
- The Dakota Territory is created in 1861. All land
remaining from
the Minnesota border to the Rocky Mountains are included in the
Dakota Territory.
- Yankton is named capital of newly organized Dakota Territory
in 1861.
- In 1874 Lt. Col. George A. Custer discovers gold in the
Black Hills.
- A bill for statehood passes making South Dakota, North
Dakota, Montana and Washington States of the Union on February
22, 1889.

- South Dakota is admitted to the Union as the 40th State,
in 1889.
- Pierre becomes the temporary capital in 1889.
Although many cities vie for the designation Pierre remained the
capital.
- The
Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 is the site where the 7th Cavalry
killed more than 250 Lakota men, women and children. A monument near the town
of Wounded Knee marks the site.
- In 1918, three States grant Women the right to vote; South Dakota,
Michigan and Oklahoma.
- 1927: Gutzon Borglam begins work on Mount Rushmore
National Memorial. The faces of
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and
Abraham Lincoln are depicted on the mountain carving.
- 1948: Korczak Ziolkowski begins work on the Crazy Horse
mountain carving in the Black Hills. When completed, it will be
the largest mountain carving in the world. Ziolkowski's family
continues the project today.
- A WWII Memorial opens in 2001 on the Capitol grounds in
Pierre as the first of its kind in the nation.
