the urging of President Abraham Lincoln, Nevada became the
36th state of the Union.
Nevada had been a wilderness just four years before.

- The Mormons in Salt Lake
[Nevada is included in the
new territory.] petition the United States Congress to establish
Utah Territory, in 1850.
- Nevada's Territorial history begins on November 12, 1851. A provisional government
is set up to protect
their land claims and maintain civil order.
- A Bill of Rights and proposed State Constitution is adopted at
an 1859 constitutional convention that was held at Genoa.
- Isaac Roop, in 1859, becomes the governor of the provisional
territory of Nevada
- President
James Buchanan signs the 1861 Act of Congress giving territorial
status to Nevada, separate from Utah. Government James W. Nye
proclaims that the Territorial government is established.
- "Nevada" is
spanish for "Snow Capped". Adopted in 1861
TheTerritorial Motto is
"Volens et Potens" - "Willing and Able".
- Statehood obtained. Nevada is granted statehood on October 31,
1864 becoming the
36th state.
- Territorial Governor James W. Nye is appointed in 1864 by Pres. Abraham
Lincoln to ensure the stability of the territory. Stability was essential
to prevent the gold
and silver production from being disrupted or finding its way
into Confederate hands.
- Henry Goode Blasdel, in 1864 is the first elected
elected governor of Nevada but by
state constitutional provision Territorial Governor James W.
Nye serves as acting Governor of Nevada for around 5 weeks.
- Nevada's second but first elected Governor dies in 1900 at his home in
Oakland,
California.
- The Nevada State Legislature overrides the Governor's veto in
1869 to legalize gambling in Nevada.
- An 1877 Act is passed that prohibits winning money from
persons who do not the have the right to gamble it away.
- In 1880 the right to vote for political candidates is extended to
non-whites, excluding the Native American Indian, in Nevada.
- Charles Clark Stevenson becomes the 6th Governor of Nevada in
1887. Governor Stevenson serves until September 21st, 1890 when
he is the first to die in office.
- Frank Bell becomes the 7th Governor of Nevada when Governor
Stevenson dies in 1890
- Both major parties back free coinage of silver in 1888.

- Josiah and Elizabeth Potts were jointly hung in
Elko County, Nevada in June 20, 1890 for the crime of murder. Elizabeth
is the only woman to be executed in Nevada.
- Roswell Keyes Colcord in 1891 becomes the 8th Governor of
Nevada and serves until 1895. At 100 years of age Governor Colcord
dies in Carson City on October 30,1939.
- The Colored Republican Club is formed in 1894, with D. J. Harris
president, Alex Harris Secretary, Wm. Lynch Treasurer.
- John Edward Jones becomes the 9th Governor of Nevada in 1895.
Governor Jones dies in office on April 10,1896.
- Reinhold Sadler becomes Acting Governor of Nevada in 1896 when Governor Jones
dies.
- Acting
Governor Reinhold Sadler was elected Governor in 1898 and
continues serving until 1903.
- A 1901 Law is passed prohibiting the selling of horse-meat without informing the purchaser.
- Nevada's first official Labor Day is celebrated in Reno on September 7, 1903
- "Honest John" Sparks is elected governor in 1903 and
dies in office in 1908.
- Virgil Earp, becomes Deputy
Sheriff in Goldfield in 1904. He is the brother of lawman, Wyatt
Earp, and survivor of
the famous shootout at the "O. K. Corral, He later
dies of pneumonia in Goldfield,
Oct. 19, 1905.
- Denver Dickerson becomes the 12th governor
in 1908 when Governor Sparks dies in office. Dickerson looses
the 1910 run for governor.
- In 1910 Gambling is abolished in Nevada.
- First state motor vehicle law passed in 1913, the license fee
is set at 12.5 cents per horsepower.
- Nevada women are granted vote by state election in 1919.

- Sadie D. Hurst, in 1919, becomes the first woman to serve in
the State Legislature
- Clara Dunham Crowell is appointed, in 1919, as the first woman
sheriff in Nevada.
- Ruth Averill, republican from Nye county in 1921, is the
first woman attorney to serve in the Nevada Assembly.
- The Native American Indian is given the right to vote by US
Congress in 1924.
- Fredrick Bennett Balzar becomes the 16th Governor of Nevada in
1927. Balzar signs Nevada's open
gambling law and the six weeks divorce law. He passes away in the governor's
mansion March 21st, 1934.
- 1931 March 19 - The Governor of Nevada, Fred Balzar, in 1931
signs the "wide open" gambling bill that was introduced
by Winnemucca rancher, Assemblyman Phil Tobin.
- Morley Griswold becomes the 17th governor of Nevada in 1934
when Governor Balzar dies in office. Griswold serves until 1935.
He loses a campaign in the 1934 race for governor.
- First woman Mayor in Nevada was Dorothy Porter of of North Las
Vegas in 1954.
