- March 15, 1820 -
Maine
is the 23rd state admitted to the Union. Its
admission to the Union as a free state balanced the
simultaneous admission of Missouri as a slave state.
Area - 33,741 sq. miles

lead.) Nickname - Pine Tree State
- The first white
settlement was by the Plymouth Company at Popham in 1607 but
failed to survive the winter.
- First naval battle of the Revolutionary War occurs
in 1775 off the
coast of Machias.
- Massachusetts agrees in 1819 to allow The District of
Maine to petition for statehood.
- As a result of the Missouri Compromise in 1820, Maine becomes its
own state.
- Maine is admitted to the Union in 1820.
- Maine, by State Constitution in 1820, becomes the first state to
give voting rights and school privileges to all, regardless of race.
- Harriet Tubman is born into slavery in Maryland in 1820. She
later becomes free and works the "underground railroad".
- Governor Fairfield declares war on England in 1839, over
a boundary dispute.
This is the only time a state has declared war on a
foreign power. The dispute is settled without bloodshed.
- Maine becomes the first state in 1851 to outlaw the sale of all alcoholic
beverages.
- Paris, Maine native, Hannibal Hamlin in 1860 is named
Abraham Lincoln's running mate for Vice President.
- James G. Blaine, Republican Presidential nominee in 1884 suffers
a narrow defeat to Grover Cleveland.
- Melville W. Fuller, a native of Maine, in 1888 becomes
the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme court.
- In September, 1920 the women of Maine are the
first to exercise the right to vote. The 19th amendment of
the U.S. Constitution had been ratified earlier that year.

- Skowhegan native Margaret Chase Smith in 1948 becomes the
first woman elected
to the U.S. Senate making her, also, the first women to serve in both
houses of Congress. Smith had served in the U.S. House
beginning in 1940.
- Election Day in Maine is moved in 1957 from September to
November to coincide with the rest of the nation.

Margaret Chase Smith, a Republican from Maine,
becomes the first Senator on June 1st, 1950
to denounce Joseph
McCarthy's tactics in his crusade against communism.
- Edmund Muskie in 1958 is the first Maine Democrat ever
elected to the U.S. Congress.
- Margaret Chase Smith becomes the first woman to run for
the U.S. Presidency in a major party primary (Republican
Convention in San Francisco) in
1964.
- James Longley an Independent in 1974 is elected Governor of Maine. He
the first Independent governor elected by popular vote in the history of the United States.
- Rumford native, Senator Edmund Muskie replaces
Cyrus Vance in 1979 as President Carter's Secretary of State.
- Waterville native, Senator George Mitchell is
named the U.S. Senate Majority Leader in 1988.
- Brunswick resident Angus King in 1994 becomes the
second popularly elected Independent governor in United States
history.
