  • November 8, 1889 - Montana becomes the 41st state admitted to the Union.
    Area - 147,046 sq. miles        Capital - Helena

- United States acquires most of Montana in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
- The Oregon Treaty in 1846 gives the rest of Montana to the U.S.
- Leader of an outlaw gang, Henry Plummer is elected in 1863 as sheriff of Bannack and all gold camps southeast of the Bitterroot.
- Chief Deputy Donald H, Dillingham of Virginia City, is the first lawman killed in the Line of Duty, assassinated in 1863 in the daylight of June 29th on Virginia City's Main Street by two of Henry Plummer's deputies.
- $250,000 is stolen and 102 known killed in 1863 by Henry Plummer's "Road Agents" gang. A Vigilante Committee is formed by outraged citizens. Within five weeks 21 gang members are hung and many more are banished from the Territory.
- A Vigilante Committee in 1864 hangs Henry Plummer and his other "Innocent" associates.
- The Montana Territory is created in 1864 by an act signed by President Abraham Lincoln.
- Bannack chosen in 1864 as first Territorial Capitol of Montana.
- Montana's first U.S. Marshal, George M. Pinney, is appointed by President Lincoln. He servs from 1865 to 1867.
- Montana becomes the 41st state of United States on November 8th, 1889 under the administration of President Benjamin Harrison.

- Montana women receive the right to vote in 1914.
- Jeanette Rankin elected from Montana in 1916 to be the first woman to serve in the U.S. Congress.
- 1917 - Jeanette Rankin votes in 1917, against the U.S. entry into World War I;
- Mrs Leo Hunter, Rosebud County Sheriff's Office is appointed in 1918 as the first female law officer in Montana.
- Congresswoman Jeanette Rankin in 1941 votes against the U.S. entering into World War II.
- Mike Mansfield is elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952 and serves until 1976 when he retires to becomes U.S. ambassador to Japan.
- Montana's economy is directly affected in 1988 when U.S. and Canada initiate a Free-Trade Agreement.
- Montana loses one of its two U.S. Representatives in 1992 as a result of the 1990 federal census. The two incumbents oppose each other for the lone remaining seat.
- Montana reinstitutes a daylight speed limit of 70 mph on 2-lane paved roads in 1999 as result of the rise in highway deaths.
- The Montana Legislature deregulates the state's electric industry in 2001.
