Motto - The Crossroads of
America Nickname - Hoosier State

In 1783, Indiana area given to the United States Territory.
A Declaration of Cessation of Hostilities was agreed to by
the King of Great Britain, and the United States of America.
- Congress, in 1800, splitting the Northwest Territory creates the Indiana Territory, which
includes Illinois.
- Michigan Territory separated from the Indiana Territory In
1805.
- In 1808 voting is extended to those with town property worth
$100.00.
- In 1809 Illinois Territory separated from the Indiana
Territory.
- In 1811 the voting act of 1808 is revised allowing free white
males, 21 years or older, who has paid a county or territorial
tax and has resided 1 year in the territory, to vote.
- The Indiana General Assembly petitions Congress for statehood
in 1811 by a vote of 4 to 3. Denied but would be allowed when
the population reached 35,000.
- Territorial Capital moved to Corydon from Vincennes in 1813.
- In 1816 Indiana became the 19th state
with the capitol at Corydon. Jonathan Jennings becomes the first
Governor of Indiana.

"Our Boat will
[be] named the Indiana Hoosier." was written in a letter to Gen.
John Tipton, by
G. L. Murdock
on Feb. 11, 1831.
- The "Carrier's Address" of the Indiana Democrat on
January
3rd 1832
includes the word Hoosier.
- Indiana adopted a state constitution in 1851 that included
protecting the property rights of married women.
- A poem is used in the Indianapolis Journal on January
1st 1833, written by John Finley of Richmond, "The Hoosher's
Nest." Days later a Toast is made, "[To] The Hoosher State of
Indiana," by John W. Davis. Later that year former Governor
James B. Ray announced his intentions to publish the The
Hoosier at Greencastle.
- "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away," became the official
state song on March 14, 1913, by the Indiana General Assembly.
- The State Flag is adopted in 1917. It was designed by
Paul Hadley of Mooresville who won a competition as part of the
stat's 1916 Centennial. "The field of the
flag shall be blue with nineteen stars and a flaming torch in
gold or buff. Thirteen stars shall be arranged in an outer
circle, representing the thirteen original states; five stars
shall be arranged in a half circle below the torch and inside
the outer circle of stars, representing the states admitted
prior to Indiana; and the nineteenth star, appreciably larger
than the others and representing Indiana shall be placed above
the flame of the torch." - Indiana Code.
- Indiana establishes its state park system under the leadership
of Richard Lieber.
- The tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is adopted by the
1931 General Assembly at the official state tree.
- The 1933 General Assembly adopts the cardinal (Richmondena
cardinalis) as the state bird.
"The Crossroads of America," is adopted as the Indiana state
motto in 1937.
- In 1957 the General Assembly adopts the peony (Paeonia)
as the state flower.
- The official state poem, "Indiana," is adopted in 1963.

- The 1971 General Assembly adopts limestone as the
official state stone.
- Indiana ratifies the Equal Rights Amendment in 1977, three more states
are needed for passage.
- English is adopted as the official state language by the 1984
General Assembly.
- The 1996 General Assembly adopts the Wabash River as the
official state river.
