- June 25, 1788 - Virginia is the 10th state admitted
to the Union.
Virginia secedes and Richmond became the capital of the
Confederacy on May 29, 1861, but re-entered the Union after
the war.

- Virginia is the birthplace of 8 former presidents,
the most of any state.
- In 1584
Virginia was named for Queen Elizabeth I of England (she was
known as the Virgin Queen).
- James Madison was born in 1751. Madison became the 4th and
shortest President at 5-foot, 4-inches.

- James Monroe was born in 1758 in Westmoreland County,
- William Henry Harrison was born at
Berkley in 1773. Harrison becomes the 9th U.S. President for 31 days before he
dies of pneumonia on April 4, 1841. He is the first President
to die in office.
- Virginia
declares independence in 1776, from Great Britain.
- In 1776 Virginia adopts its first constitution.

- The Capitol is established in Richmond in 1780. The General Assembly
would meet in a building located at Cary and Pearl, now known as
14th Street.
- Zachary Taylor is born in 1784, in Virginia. The first time he
votes was when he casts his vote, in the 1849
presidential election, for himself.
- Thomas Jefferson's historic Bill for Religious Freedom
passes in t
- The US Constitutional Convention of 1787 gives the states
the right to set voting qualifications. Virginia denies
women the right to vote.
- Virginia enters the Union gaining Statehood, on June 25th,
1788, as the 10th
state.
- George Washington serves as President of
the United States from 1789 to 1797. It is said that Washington
posed only once for a statue. The life-size statue
of George Washington that is in the center of the capitol in Richmond
was made by Houdon.
- John Tyler is born in Virginia, in 1790. He is the
first Vice President to become President due to the death of his
predecessor, William Henry Harrison.

- The leader of a Virginia
slave revolt, Nat Turner, is hanged in 1831.
- Joseph Johnson of Bridgeport is elected the first Governor to
be chosen by popular vote.
- Douglas Wilder is
the first Black elected to a U.S. governorship when elected in
1989 as governor of Virginia.
- Winsome Sears a Black Republican, breaks
the 10 term hold by democrats when in 2001 she becomes the first
woman Veteran and first foreign born woman to be elected to the
State House of Delegates.
