Nickname - Beaver State
- Federally-appointed Governor
Joseph Lane arrives in 1849 and proclaims Oregon is now a
Territory of the United States.
- The Oregon Donation Land Act of 1850 grants free land to
"whites and half-breed Indians" in the Oregon Territory. Blacks,
Asians, and full blood Indians are excluded.
- Washington Territory is formed in 1853.
- The Exclusion Law is repealed in 1854.

- In 1857 a new exclusion law is added to the constitution's
Bill of Rights.
- Oregon is admitted to the union in 1859 as the 33rd state.
It is the first state admitted with an exclusion law written
into the state constitution. Slavery is not allowed.
- Oregon adopts a law, in 1862, requiring all blacks, Chinese,
Hawaiians, and Mulattos (people of mixed race) residing in
Oregon to pay an annual tax of $5.
- In 1862 Oregon bans interracial marriages, making it against
the law for whites to marry anyone 1/4 or more black.
- The state's ban on interracial marriages is extended, in 1866,
to prevent whites from marrying anyone who is 1/4 or more
Chinese or Hawaiian, and 1/2 or more Native American.
- In 1870 the Fifteenth Amendment, grants black men the right to
vote, superseding a clause in the Oregon State Constitution
denying blacks the vote. Oregon did not pass the 15th
Amendment.
- Oregon women gain the right to vote in 1912.

- 1927 The Oregon State Constitution is amended in 1927 to
remove the clause denying blacks the right to vote. Although
moot, since the 15th Amendment of the U. S. Constitution in
1870, three previous attempts to remove the clause failed in
1883, 1895, and 1916.

- Paul Simon was born in Eugene in 1928. He died in 2003
and was known for being a Senator of Illinois.
- Prohibition of interracial marriages is repealed in 1951.
-In 1953 Sen. Wayne Morse protesting domination of the
Republican Party by conservatives decided to leave the
Republican Party.
- the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United
States is ratified in 1959 by Oregon Voters.
- The Oregon 1968 Democratic primary selected Senator Eugene
McCarthy.
- A Death with Dignity Act was passed by Oregon voters in
1994.
- In 1995 a US judge ruled the Death with Dignity Act
unconstitutional.
- In 1997 60% voter approval affirms doctor-assisted suicides.
15 terminally ill people took advantage of the new law in 1998.
