- June 1, 1796 - Tennessee is the 16th state admitted
to the Union. Tennessee
joins the Confederacy, on June 8, 1861, becoming a major
battleground for the Civil War, re-entering the Union after
war's end.

- David Crockett is born in
Tennessee in 1786.
- North Carolina cedes the Tennessee region to the Federal
Government in 1789 and it is made into the new Territory of the United States South of the River
Ohio. William Blount becomes first and only governor of the
territory.
- Tennessee becomes the 16th state on June 1st, 1796.
- John
Sevier is elected the first governor of Tennessee in 1796.
- James K. Polk begins
his law practice in Columbia in 1820. He becomes President in
1845.
- in 1824 At age 16 and poor Andrew Johnson runs
away from his employer in North Carolina to find himself in Tennessee with a bounty
placed against him. The runaway will become President in
1865.
- The legislature adjourns on October 22nd, 1824 ending Davy
Crockett's political career in Tennessee.
- Andrew Jackson runs an unsuccessfully bid for president in
1824.
- Andrew Jackson is elected the 7th President of the U.S. in
1829.
- 1834--- The state constitution is amended in 1834. It rescinds
the right to vote to Free Blacks.
- Davy Crockett in 1836 will die with all 130 other men at the
Alamo, in Texas.
- Captain William Driver settles in Nashville in 1837. He
carries with him the flag now called Old Glory. He flew the flag
on his voyages around the world.
- The first temperance law is passed in 1838 in Tennessee.
- 1845--- James K. Polk is becomes President of the U.S. in 1845
having ran on an expansionist plank.
- As the Civil War begins in 1861. William Driver hides Old Glory
inside his quilt for safekeeping.
- Native Tennessean, Nathan Bedford Forrest in 1861, becomes a successful cavalry commander
in the Confederate Army.
- In 1861 Andrew Johnson, sides against Tennessee's succession,
to be the only Southerner to retain his seat in the U.S. Senate.
Andrew Johnson owned slaves himself. Lincoln will later appoint
him military governor of Tennessee.

Andrew Johnson becomes the 17 President of the U.S. in 1865.
- The Ku Klux Klan is formed in Pulaski, Tennessee in 1866.
- Andrew Johnson leaves retirement in 1874 when he is elected to the U.S.
Senate. He is the only ex-president to
return to the Senate chamber. Johnson is only able to attend one session before
dying of a stroke at his daughter's house
during the summer recess. President Andrew Johnson is interned in Greeneville, wrapped
in an American flag with a copy of the U.S. Constitution for a pillow.
- In the 1886 campaign of the War of the Roses, 2 brothers--Robert Love Taylor and Alfred Alexander
Taylor both run for governor. Robert Love Taylor, the Democrat, wins
- The Driver family donates "Old Glory" to the
Smithsonian Institution in 1922.
- Dr.
Martin Luther King, Jr., civil rights leader, is assassinated in
1968 by James Earl Ray in Memphis. The April 4th death precipitates rioting in many cities.
- The sunshine law of 1974 allows the public to attend local and
state government meetings.
