- August 10, 1821 - Missouri
is the 24th state admitted to the Union. Missouri
was admitted as a slave state on August 10, 1821, after an
agreement known as The Missouri Compromise designated
Missouri as a slave state while Maine would be admitted as a
free state.

- A portion of the Territory of Louisiana
becomes the
Territory of Missouri in 1812.
- The issue of slavery in the 1820 Missouri statehood controversy
becomes a national
issue
- The "Missouri
Compromise" of 1920 will allow Missouri to enter the Union as a slave
state and Maine as a free state, keeping the balance of
slave and free states equal.
- Alexander McNair is elected in 1820 as Missouri's first governor.
- In 1821 President James Monroe signs the bill admitting Missouri as the 24th
state.
- The St. Charles was designated temporary state capitol in
1821.
- In 1836 abolitionists send petitions to the US Congress. Senator Thomas Hart Benton verbally attacks
them for doing so.
- Governor Lilburn Boggs issued the "Extermination
Order" in 1838 demanding that
members of the Mormon church leave the state of Missouri.
- Missouri bans free blacks from settling in the state in 1844.
- On March 4, 1849 US Senator David Rice Atchison, from Missouri,
was President for a day.
- The 1861 "Rebel Legislature" of Missouri adopts an Act
of Secession.
- January 11- Slavery abolished in Missouri by an ordinance
on January 11, 1865, making Missouri the first slave state
to free its slaves before the adoption of the 13th
Amendment to the US Constitution
- Missouri's second Constitution is adopted on April 10, 1865.
The new constitution excludes
former Confederate sympathizers from the vote and certain
occupations, severely limiting their civil rights.
- Phoebe W. Couzins, in 1887, becomes the first Woman US
Marshal in our nation's history.
- Primary election law is adopted in 1907 in Missouri.
- US
senators from Missouri were elected by the General Assembly
prior to 1913 when voters were given the right to directly elect
Senators.
- Governor Frederick D. Gardner signs a 1919 law granting the presidential
vote to women
- 1919 Missouri becomes the 11th state to ratify the 19th Amendment granting
the vote to women.
- The fist Woman to vote in all of Missouri's history is Marie Byrum
in 1920.
- Mellcene T. Smith and Sarah Lucille Turner, in 1922,
become the
first women elected to the Missouri state legislature.
- U. Senator Harry S. Truman of Independence is
elected Vice President in 1944.
- US Vice President Harry S Truman becomes the 33rd President upon
the death of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1945.

his first to be elected as the President of the United States of America.
- Leonor K. Sullivan in 1952 becomes Missouri's first
woman U. S. Representative.
- Mary Gant in 1972 becomes Missouri's first woman state
senator
- Gwen B. Giles became Missouri's first
African-American woman state senator in 1977.
- May 30 - Margaret B. Kelly becomes the first woman on May 30,
1984 to hold an appointed statewide office in Missouri when she was appointed to the
office of State Auditor
- Ann K. Covington in 1987 becomes the first woman appointed to the
Missouri Supreme Court.

Richard Gephardt, US Congressman from Missouri, running for the
Democratic nomination in 1988 in Missouri's first presidential primary.
- John Ashcroft in 2001 is ratifies as US Attorney General.
