WA Political History

November 11, 1889 - Washington was the 42nd state admitted to the Union.

Motto - Al-Ki (Unofficial, means By and by.) Nickname - Evergreen State

- The Oregon Territory is jointly occupied by United States and Great Britain by an 1818 agreement.
- The Monroe Doctrine of 1823 is the official warning to other nations not to attempt occupation in U.S. claimed lands.
- The 49th parallel is set as the boundary between United States and Great Britain, by an 1846 treaty.
- Oregon Territory is created in 1848.
- 1853 - Washington Territory is created encompassing the land east to the Rocky Mountains (Idaho and part of Montana) and north of the Columbia River to the 49th parallel. Farmers living north of the Columbia River successfully lobby Congress to declare the region Washington Territory.
- Oregon joins the Union in 1859 as a Free State.
- Idaho Territory is formed in 1863.
- In 1864 the Montana Territory is formed.
- 1883 Women are given full voting rights in the Washington Territory.
- 1887 The Supreme Court voids the law that gave women the vote in Washington Territory.

- A bill for statehood passes making Washington the 42nd State of the Union on November 11, 1889.
- Women gain the right to vote in 1910 in Washington State.
- 1926 Bertha Knight Landes is elected Mayor of Seattle. She is the first female elected mayor of a sizable American city.
- A Washington court, in 1926 rules that Workers Party candidates may appear on state ballots.
- in 1939 the Washington State Supreme Court rules the Anti-Alien Land Law of 1937 unconstitutional.
- The U.S. Supreme Court, in 1937, upholds Washington state’s minimum wage laws for women.
- In 1976, Dixy Lee Ray becomes the first woman elected governor of Washington.
- Gary Locke is elected Governor in 1996 becoming the first Chinese-American governor in the history of the U. S.
- In 1993, WA State Representative Velma Veloria (Filipino-American) became the first Asian-American woman elected to the Washington State legislature.

- In 2004 a "top two" primary was approved by the voters. A challenge in court is being made by three political parties. Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians.
- 2005 - Democrat Christine Gregoire is installed as Governor. Having lost the first two counts she wins the third recount by 139 votes when nearly 600 found ballots from King County were added to the tally. The closest governor's race in the history of Washington exposed an election riddled with improper handling of votes and voter fraud. Dino Rossi, the winner of the first two counts contested the election. The court declared 1700 votes invalid but favored the Democrats, refusing to declare the election invalid. Dino Rossi ran again against Christine Gregoire in 2008.
