the last of the thirteen colonies to join the Union.

Nickname - The Ocean State / Plantation State
- The Providence is settled by Roger Williams in
1636.
- The 1640 Union of Portsmouth and Newport is the first general
court of election in Newport.
- William Coddington is elected Governor in 1640.
- In 1643 Rhode Island was refused admission into the New
England Confederacy by the other New England Colonies.
- The name Aquidneck changed in 1643 to the Isle of Rhodes or
Rhode Island.
- 1652 records of slaves from Africa are the earliest.
- In 1652 a law against human slavery is enacted.

- In Rhode Island property ownership is established for
qualification to vote in 1724.
- The Connecticut and Rhode Island colonies prohibited continued
importation of slaves in 1774.
- The colony of Rhode Island declares its independence form
England on May 4, 1776.
- The 1784 Emancipation Act passed provides for eventual
abolition of slavery. All children birthed after March 1, 1784,
are born free.
- The US Constitutional Convention of 1787 gives the states the
right to set voting qualifications. Rhode Island the first
Eastern State to vote on the right of women to vote denies women
that right.
- Rhode Island becomes the last of the original 13 states to
ratify the U. S. Constitution on May 29, 1790.
- The People's Party is founded in 1841 by Providence lawyer
Thomas Wilson Dorr. His hopes were to liberalize the Rhode
Island charter of 1663. He proposes a new, liberal constitution
to extend the vote to state citizens who did not own property.
- 1842: Thomas Wilson Dorr's People's Party in a Rhode Island
political rebellion, forces state conservatives to abolish the
Charter of 1663 and expand voting.
- The current state constitution was adopted in 1843.
- The State Flag is established in 1877.
- The US Naval War College was established in 1884 at Newport,
R.I.
- In 1887 Rhode Island was the first Eastern State to vote on a
referendum to allow women the vote, however, it failed to pass.

- In 1897 the new State Flag was adopted.
- Rhode Island grants women the right to vote in presidential
elections only in 1917.
- Senator John Chafee was elected to the state Legislature in
1956 and later serves 3 terms as governor. He also had served as
Secretary of the Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War.
- Superior Court Judge Thomas Needham rules in 1977 that Rhode
Island wives are required to use their husbands surnames. His
decision was later overturned.
- Ruth Simmons was named the 18th Pres. of Brown University in
2000 becoming the 1st Black American to head an Ivy League
institution.
- 2001 Rhode Island became the 3rd state, in 2001, to extend
civil rights protections to transsexuals and cross-dressers.
