- November 21, 1789 - North Carolina became
the 12th state. Among all states, North Carolina troops
suffered the greatest losses during the Civil War, while fighting for the Confederacy. North
Carolina, re-entered the Union after the fighting ceased.
Area - 52,672 sq. miles

- North
Carolina becomes the first state to vote in favor of
independence on April 12, 1776.
- North Carolina ratifies the U.S.
Constitution on November 21, 1789, becoming the 12th state of
the Union.
- The US Constitutional Convention of 1787 gives the states
the right to set voting qualifications. North Carolina
denies women the right to vote.
- The capital of North Carolina is moved to Raleigh in 1794, it
was
previously located at New Bern.
- Andrew Jackson a North Carolina native becomes the
7th president of the United States in 1828.
- Edward B. Dudley is the first governor elected by the voters
of North Carolina in 1836. The governor was previously selected
by the State Senate.
- North Carolina did not secede from the Union but
rather, on May 20, 1861, voted to "undo" the act
that had brought it into the Union.

- After the Civil War North Carolina is readmitted to the
Union on July 4, 1868.
- North Carolina proposes a bill in 1897 that would be the first bill to give women the right to vote,
it is sent to a committee on
insane asylums and is never passed.
- The 19th Amendment to the United States
Constitution passes in 1920, giving women the right to vote across the
country, including North Carolina.
- The birth of the "Sit-In" is born
February 1, 1960, in Greensboro,
North Carolina, to protest segregation at a lunch counter.
Within days, sit-ins occurring across the state.
- Governor Jim Hunt is re-elected in 1996 to a 4th term to
set the North Carolina record.
